Teacher bias is woven in the culture of education, which sometimes cannot be seen, but its effects can be detrimental. Overcoming biases to prevent discriminatory practices in literacy education is paramount. The presentation focuses on identifying how biases present themselves and the reflective skills educators can develop to create an environment that does not transgress the value of quality literacy instruction. Doing so will empower students including minorities and special education to contribute and develop literacy skills that are transferable beyond the classroom. Too often quality instruction has been falsely juxtaposed against teacher bias and student demographic as though they are mutually exclusive, and this presentation aims to review how the identification and removal of those biases integrated with critical skills can close achievement gaps.
